The Best Time to Paint Your Exterior

In the Bay Area, exterior painting season runs May through October, according to local painting contractors. Walnut Creek's warm, dry summers suit early-morning starts; the wet months, December through February, are the ones to avoid.

The local climate in two numbers

At Concord's Buchanan Field, July averages a high of 88°F and gets essentially no rain, while December, January and February each average about 3.2 inches (NOAA 1991–2020 normals; about 16 inches a year).

Why the season matters

Paint needs time to dry and cure. Fog, humidity or drizzle before it cures can ruin the finish, and rain washes uncured paint off. Every product's data sheet lists a minimum air and surface temperature and how long it needs before it can get wet. Ask the painter which product they're using and check the sheet.

Working with inland heat

  • Start early. Walnut Creek and other inland towns are well suited to early-morning starts.
  • Follow the shade: paint east walls in the afternoon and west walls in the morning.
  • Avoid painting surfaces that are hot to the touch; paint can dry too fast, lap and blister.
  • Watch the forecast for the occasional early-fall storm; a good crew will pause rather than paint wet siding.

When to book

Painters' calendars fill as summer approaches; waiting until summer to call can mean weeks or months of delay. Getting quotes in late winter or early spring gives you time to compare bids, sort out HOA color approval and plan repairs.

Questions homeowners ask

What month is best to paint a house exterior in the Bay Area?

Painting contractors point to May through October. Late spring and early fall are often the most comfortable: dry, but without the hottest inland afternoons.

Can you paint an exterior in winter here?

It's possible on dry stretches, but rain, cold nights and dew make it risky; paint needs dry surfaces and time to cure before moisture hits it. Winter is a good time to get quotes and book a spring start.

Is it too hot to paint in July in Walnut Creek?

July highs average about 88°F at nearby Concord. Crews usually start early and work each side of the house when it's in shade, so paint isn't applied to hot, sun-baked walls.
